The Importance Of Your Mindset When Managing Your Business

September 15, 20224 min read

In this post, we'll pull back the curtain and discuss how important it is for anyone in a management role to have the right mindset.

Managing a business can be difficult, especially when you are the only one. There will always be challenges that come up, but if your mindset and attitude aren't on point then it can become even more difficult for you to manage. In this post, we'll pull back the curtain and discuss how important it is for anyone in a management role to have the right mindset.

The energy you project into your environment

Have you ever noticed when someone walks into a room and brings the energy with them?  They are energy generators, and they bring the vibe up in the whole room.   You can feel their passion and enthusiasm.

As humans, we project and receive energy from those around us.  We carry that energy with us, and it impacts not only us but all the other people we come in contact with. Positive energy can have a profound impact on your feelings of well-being, even increasing your energy and improving your communication with others. Bad energy results in feelings of discord, conflict and resentment. This goal should be our focus- to attract good energy and reject the bad.

Leading the charge

When you choose to lead, you must remember, everyone is watching you.     You are the role model, and your behavior is being interpreted as a reflection of what's acceptable.  When you're in management it becomes even more important because those who follow will be watching for clues on whether they should or shouldn't do something based on how their leader behaves.

Coping with burnout

Burnout surfaces in many different ways for different people.  It can be exhaustion or insomnia, lack of motivation or taking on too many challenges;  burnout doesn't look the same for everyone.     If you're in management, it's important to recognize the signs of your own burnout before it gets worse.  You are responsible for ensuring you are ready to do your best.

When we start feeling burned out or that things are piling on too much, we need to take a break and remember what got us here. Take a few steps back, re organize, and re prioritize.

Managing your health

You may find yourself pulled in many directions, and the management stressors can mount.  One of the most important things to do is take care of your physical health by fuelling your body, getting enough sleep, and managing your time appropriately.  I have been known to give up sleep in times of need, most Entrepreneurs (and parents, and students) have stayed up a little later than ideal when necessary.  If you are in a time of less sleep be sure you are diligent with the rest of your health practices.

Never stop growing

Leo Buscaglia wisely said  "Those who think they know it all, have no way of realizing they don't".   Personal growth is essential to business growth, and learning comes in many forms.  Networking, joining a local business group, books, podcasts, courses, and conferences are just a few options available.  When it comes to personal development content you should cycle going wide (consuming a variety of content), with going deep (consuming content on a specific topic or style).    This will ensure you don't get 'stale', and will also offer you a wide range of knowledge.
